Professor Paul Rouse

Special guest

Paul Rouse is a Professor of History at University College Dublin.

Paul's main research interest lies in the history of sport. He has written extensively on the history of Irish sport, while also working on the global history of sport. His research also extends to popular culture, the history of the media, and the history of agriculture.

In addition to teaching modules on sport and popular culture, he also teaches a module entitled: "Manufacturing Truth in the Modern World: Propaganda, Evidence, Lies, Analysis, Perspective, Power". Using a series of case studies, this module examines the history of misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation. Ultimately, the module is about the primacy of analyzing evidence and of critical thinking.

Paul has also been involved in making a number of television documentaries including Lost Generation (http://www.rte.ie/archives/exhibitions/1030-emigration-once-again/139200-lost-generation/), which tells the history of elderly Irish citizens who live in Britain. He made that programme while working as a reporter with Prime Time Investigates on RTÉ. He has also worked on documentaries for the Irish language channel TG4, including as producer-director for one on the Tailteann Games.

He writes a weekly column for the Irish Examiner newspaper and also presents the Examiner Sport podcast on Gaelic football

He is Co-Director of two major public history projects:

He was the Historical Consultant, Lectures Convenor and Exhibition Curator on the Reflecting the Rising public history commemorative event which was broadcast on RTÉ on Easter Monday, 2016.

He wrote the contextual pages on Ireland in the early twentieth century for the National Archives website that made available the 1911 Census (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/exhibition/index.html)

He was the founding editor of historyhub.ie, UCD's public history site (http://historyhub.ie).
